Ahh . . . June.
The sweet month of June! You can just hear yourself breathe a sigh of relief as you take a break from all that planning, schooling and nagging your children to finish their work:)
Some of you are schooling through June and are on the edges of your chairs excited for the end to come! Others are already finished and celebrating freedom. And still, some of you are planning to continue throughout the summer.
Whichever camp you fall in, have you asked yourself . . . this may very well be the single most important homeschool question you ask yourself this summer. Are you ready for it?
Ok, here it is . . .
How will you invest in you?
Sound’s selfish? It’s not. Let me explain.
Invest in You for a Better Year!
You are your child’s teacher. Teachers must learn and grow and be excited about what they are teaching.
Why? Because excitement is contagious and guess what. So is boredom:)
If you want your children to be excited and interested in what they are learning you need to model that. They need to see you learning and growing as a person and enjoying it. That doesn’t mean you will won’t be frustrated with your efforts. But you never give up and you reap the reward. You invest in you! Just watching you do this will teach your kids many valuable life lessons.
What do You Need?
Think back over the school year.
- What went well?
- What didn’t go so well?
- Are there new activities or skills you want to bring to your child next year? Skills that maybe you need to brush up on first? Skills like
Art, knitting, sewing, woodworking, bringing Shakespeare to your kids, nature journaling or watercolor painting. Maybe you want to spend the summer hiking, bird watching or camping, the best summer school of all!
- Are there any books you would like to read over the summer to encourage or inspire you. Books you can read without the constant doing of winter school days?
Write your answers down. Writing them down will clarify what you really need.
Pick and Choose
Now for the fun part! Look at your answers. What one skill do you want to learn or improve? Pick one. Pick something that you love and want to learn more about. Don’t choose something you hate!
What do you need to do to learn this new skill? Can you take an online class, or get out some books from the library on the subject? Do you know someone who could teach you throughout the summer while your kids play?

What book would you like to read? Is there a homeschooling book you’ve had your eye on for awhile and haven’t had the time to sit down and read? Pick one, at least for now and read to your heart’s content . . . ok . . . maybe not quite to your heart’s content, but you know what I mean:)
Some of the books on my list are:
For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaffer Macaulay, I’m listening to this one as an audiobook over and over again:)
Yes, I’m on a bit of a Charlotte Mason kick this summer:)
What about you? Share with us in the comments below what books you’ve chosen to read. That way we can cheer one another on and maybe we’ll read something you’ve suggested! At the very least it will grow my “want to read” book list, which is always crying for new books:)
Happy Homeschooling to you all!
