I just wanted to show you lovely ladies some of the fun knitting projects we’ve been working on this year! I confess that knitting is my favorite handwork to teach kids so that gets a lot of focus in our home! There is just nothing better than a lapful of soft wool in beautiful colors to help a body get through those long cold Canadian winters! Just look at this basket of loveliness! It’s enough to make anyone happy!
This year Rachel was supposed to knit a pair of socks in her handwork curriculum! I had never successfully knitted a pair of socks so I thought I would learn along with her. Since this was the first pair ever, we knit it in worsted weight yarn. We found this lovely yarn from Knit Picks. It’s called Chroma. It’s a beautiful sturdy wool yarn with nylon content, which sock knitters know is great for durability! There are so many colors to choose from! You will need one or two balls of this yarn to make a pair of socks. Unfortunately, I can’t share the pattern we used with you because it came with the Christopherus grade 5 curriculum. Check around on the internet for some easy beginner sock knitting patterns in worsted. You might like these or these.
Serene’s handwork project for this year is to knit a pair of mittens. We are using the super simple pattern from this book:
This is such a cool book, complete with a story about a grandmother teaching her granddaughter to knit. The book includes very clear instructions as well as a pattern to knit the mittens, a hat and even how to embellish the finished items with some embroidery stitches! This book may be hard to find, but I highly recommend it if you can get a copy.
You need to use a super bulky 100% wool yarn for these mittens. They knit up quite large and then they shrink a bit when you felt them. I think the yarn we used was not quite bulky enough. These mittens are still waiting for the thumbs to be added:)
What kind of handwork projects are you and your children working on?I would love to hear about what you all are making!
